TASTE | OLD FASHIONED LAYER CAKES

  This month’s issue of Saveur magazine has an article featuring old fashioned layer cakes. My heart swoons to thoughts of towering, moist, beautiful and delectable layer cakes. After reading the feature I am forced to bake each during the next 2 weeks for our Canteen specials.  Lemon layer cake, Red Velvet cake, Walnut Spice cake, Caramel cake and the Coconut cake. This coming Tuesday I will be presenting the first, Red Velvet cake with cream cheese icing. Friday will be, my favorite, Coconut cake with 7 minute icing and fresh coconut shavings. INSPIRATION | 36 DAYS AND COUNTING……..

till the first day of spring. Today with the sun shinning, I’m busy contemplating what is going to be first on my garden projects “to do list.” I’ve decided to tackle designing a knot garden in my front yard. The focal point is going to be a beautiful twig arch that I have been drooling over on my drive to work for 2 years, I’ve stopped many times and gazed longingly and finally will purchase for this project. TASTE | APPLE BUTTER

    Hello all, This week I have been trying to come up with ways to use 4 cases of local apples. After searching through cookbooks I happened  upon a recipe for an apple butter tart. Humm……. sounds interesting. I then researched apple butter and bingo I found a way to use our apples. The first recipe I tried is very simple but after investigating I found that maybe I should add apple cider, which we have on hand fresh and local from Tracy’s Orchard in Greencastle Pa.   Apple Butter   makes 4 pints 5 1/2…
